The Sea to Sky Food Recovery assessment and planning project was undertaken to increase edible food donations, improve access to more affordable/accessible food, and reduce food waste in the region.
To achieve these objectives, the project:
- Identified the type, volume, and sources of surplus food in the region;
- Explored current needs and food distribution models;
- Compiled a set of food recovery and distribution best practices; and
- Identified actions for how to improve food recovery and redistribution.
The Sea to Sky Food Recovery Strategy and Action Plan includes summary information, key findings, and the final set of strategies and actions.
We designed and led the project on behalf of the Resort Municipality of Whistler with funding from the Union of BC Municipalities Poverty Reduction Program. A task force comprised of individuals from food distribution organizations (FDOs), local government, and food industry (hotels, restaurants, and grocers) representatives was engaged through the project and provided valuable insights and information.
The Sea to Sky Food Recovery project (completed in 2021) identified the high-level strategies to address the biggest opportunities/needs for food recovery, redistribution, and waste diversion in the region, and then for each strategy, specific actions were recommended.
This Progress Report 2022 presents the status of each action as at the end of 2022. Through 2022, WCS Engagement + Planning coordinated implementation as much as possible with budget remaining from the 2021 project.
