Accommodations Sector Sustinability Strategy,
Whistler, BC

Initiated by the Whistler Centre for Sustainability in early 2009, the Accommodation Sector Strategy is an initiative of a group of 24 like minded accommodation providers that want to improve their sustainability related performance. The Centre's role to this point focuses on convening meetings and preparing/presenting relevant content around best practices or specific initiatives to move the sector forward. The Whistler Centre for Sustainability has recently applied for funding to develop benchmarking programs and initiatives to reduce transportation impacts related to this sector. Additionally, we are working with Tourism Whistler to incorporate ‘green standard certified' icons/filters for properties on their online booking system.

Sustainable Retail Workshops, Whistler, BC

Leveraging the sustainability commitment of local champions such as lululemon athletica and Hatley in Whistler, the WCS has both hosted in-store workshops and walking tours throughout the Village to raise awareness of the possibility of sustainable retail. Next steps include promotion of a voluntary peer-to-peer challenge to create barriers to heat-loss from storefront entry-ways, and a possible Chamber luncheon on best practices in sustainable retail best for the future.

Climate Smart Workshops for Tourism Enterprises,

Climate Smart is a comprehensive, business case-based training that takes enterprises through the process of creating a greenhouse gas emissions inventory and developing reduction strategies with a focus on cost savings and brand lift. Climate Smart is designed to train key staff and provide you with the tools to become more competitive in an era of carbon regulation and volatile energy prices. Through this program a cohort of 10-15 enterprises will undertake 3 four-hour workshops hosted over an 8-10 week period supported by climate change experts experienced in advising small businesses and organizations
