Dan Wilson
Sustainability Planner – Tourism Business and Monitoring Specialist
Dan is a monitoring and reporting specialist, with a focus on sustainability indicators. His experience in both strategic planning and frontline positions in a municipal position as well as in the corporate and tourism industry brings a wealth of knowledge to sustainability projects. His involvement in tourism has taken him through operating his own tour company and restaurant, performing marketing research for travel associations, lead guiding sea kayaking trips, and innovative business development initiatives for Intrawest Corporation. Recent work includes spearheading a sustainability initiative at Fairmont Hotels and Resorts Chateau Whistler, developing and implementing a sustainability monitoring and reporting program for Whistler’s community sustainability plan Whistler2020, leading an accommodations sector sustainability strategy, and facilitating indicator development for the Province’s Resort Collaborative initiative.
Dan’s dedication to learning has enhanced his skills in the area of corporate training, strategic planning, and energy management and he is currently finalizing a master’s research project on how to advance more sustainable heating systems in a mountain resort setting. Dan has lived on and off in Whistler for 16 years, only moving away to pursue his commerce degree in Victoria, masters degree in Sweden and other tourism business opportunities. Dan is joined in Whistler with his wife Tracy and two young sons and enjoys biking, skiing, sailing, music and eating fine local food.
